Department of Public Safety

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport’s Department of Public Safety is a dual function department that oversees the Security Service, as well as the Aircraft Fire/Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, to the Airport’s visitors and traveling public. The Director – Public Safety, under the general direction of the Executive Director, heads the Department. Along with public services, the Public Safety Office controls and issues all ID access media and parking permits. Identification access media and parking permits are available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The office is closed on holidays and weekends. 

Airport Security

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport provides a full-time Security Service consisting of a Chief and eight (8) law enforcement officers spanning 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. All law enforcement officers are trained and certified under the Acts 120 and 235 and undergo over 40 hours of extensive training to meet FAA requirements under FAR Part 107 and FAR Part 139.

Due to the broad spectrum of activities and dignitaries visiting the Airport, the law enforcement officers work closely with a number of local, State and Federal agencies, including the Secret Service, FBI, U.S. Customs, and both Federal and State Drug Enforcement agencies. 

Fire/Rescue & Emergency Medical Services

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport provides fire/rescue and emergency medical service 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week and is manned by Airport personnel. Each employee undergoes approximately 20 days of fire/rescue training initially and reoccurring training each month. The department has two (2) full-time Lead Firemen that are responsible for both fire and medical training. Each employee, along with their medical training, is certified by the American Heart Association in C.P.R. and the use of a defibrillator. The Airport is equipped with a full compliment of EMS equipment and medical supplies, including defibrillators located in the Terminal Building.
